Procurement teams rarely need a single “winner.” They need an honest trade-off between ground pressure, transfer cost and curb geometry — the paving equivalent of the crawler-versus-wheeled excavator debate.
Lower ground pressure on soft or unbound base, stronger traction on steep gradeability sections, and better stability when screed packages push past about 7.5 m. Typical operating weight for mid/large tracked chassis lands in the 16–22 t class; ground pressure can be held near 45–55 kPa with wider track shoes. Best when the corridor stays on one site for multiple night windows.

Compact wheeled units commonly sit in the 12–16 t operating-weight band with engine power around 129–160 kW.
