Tracked Paver vs. Wheeled Paver: Which Fits the Jobsite?

Procurement teams rarely need a single “winner.” They need an honest trade-off between ground pressure, transfer cost and curb geometry — the paving equivalent of the crawler-versus-wheeled excavator debate.

Side A — Tracked asphalt paver

Lower ground pressure on soft or unbound base, stronger traction on steep gradeability sections, and better stability when screed packages push past about 7.5 m. Typical operating weight for mid/large tracked chassis lands in the 16–22 t class; ground pressure can be held near 45–55 kPa with wider track shoes. Best when the corridor stays on one site for multiple night windows.

Side B — Wheeled asphalt paver

Faster road travel between urban overlays without a lowboy every transfer, tighter curb returns, and lower mobilization cost on firm, prepared surfaces. Compact wheeled units commonly sit in the 12–16 t operating-weight band with engine power around 129–160 kW. Best when nightly tonnage stays moderate and the crew hops sites inside the same metro area.

Where these packages stop working

  • Soft subgrade + wheeled chassis: wheeled pavers are not the first pick when unbound base cannot hold target ground pressure without rutting.
  • Cold-plate night starts: electric-heat screeds still need a documented warm-up curve; dumping the first truck onto a cold plate creates cold joints no roller train can erase.
  • Abrasive quarry mixes: standard screed plates and conveyor flights wear out inside ~500 paving hours on high-silica feed — abrasive kits must be staged before the season, not after the first seizure.
  • Flood / silt exposure: after seasonal flooding, hydraulic circuits must be resampled to ISO 4406 before grade/slope automation returns to automatic mode; skipping the sample risks pilot-pressure drift.
